Bremont: Waterman Apex

A DIVE WATCH WITH A CAUSE: INTRODUCING THE WATERMAN APEX AS TESTED BY LAIRD HAMILTON

Following the sell-out success of the Limited Edition Waterman in 2018, Bremont is introducing its much anticipated successor with the Waterman Apex. Designed to celebrate life on and under the water, the Waterman Apex is a high-performance mechanical dive watch forming part of Bremont’s iconic Supermarine range. Limited to just 250 pieces, the Waterman Apex is not just built to be entirely fit for purpose, but sales of the watch will also be supporting oceanic research for the pioneering non-profit organisation Bimini Shark Lab.
Proudly sporting and testing the Waterman Apex is arguably the greatest big wave surfer of all time, ‘Waterman’ Laird Hamilton, world-renowned for taming some of the planet’s mightiest waves. Laird is an American sportsman, waterman, pioneer, and innovator who joins Bremont’s impressive line-up of Brand Ambassadors. A celebrated innovator and guiding genius of crossover board sports including tow-in-surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and hydrofoil boarding, Laird is the ultimate Waterman, continuously pushing himself beyond endurance and expanding all possibilities within the sport.
In line with Bremont’s most technical dive watches the Waterman Apex incorporates an automatic helium escape valve and crown protector as well as boasting a 42 hour power reserve with GMT and date functionality. The 43mm steel Trip-Tick® case incorporates a scratch resistant sapphire unidirectional bezel paired with a matt black dial subtly decorated with a shark fin motif amongst waves, nodding to the partnership with Bimini Shark Lab. The Super-LumiNova® filled applied indexes and hands are complemented by a red seconds hand and blue GMT hand which matches the integrated Harbour Blue rubber strap. Turning the watch over reveals its open sapphire case back through which the custom rotor can be seen, designed to reprise the dial with the shark fin motif in blue. Despite having an open case back, the Waterman Apex is water resistant to 500m with the movement being protected by Bremont’s patented anti-shock vibration mount technology. True to form, this is a watch that can be tested to extremes.
Continuing Bremont’s passion for ocean conservation, the new Limited Edition celebrates the work of Bimini Shark Lab with Bremont donating a percentage of all Waterman Apex watch sales to support and continue their work. The Bimini Biological Field Station Foundation, ‘Bimini Shark Lab’, is a non-profit organisation in The U.S.A and The Bahamas focused on advancing humankind’s knowledge of the biology of marine animals, particularly sharks and rays. Established in 1990 by Dr Samuel Gruber, the Shark Lab mission was clear: to better understand the biology of sharks and rays and the role that they play in the marine ecosystem; to educate future scientists and to enhance conservation and awareness through the promotion of findings. Laird Hamilton comments, “My journey as a waterman started when I was a child living in Hawaii. Big ocean, big winds, and a powerful land to have grown up in. Everywhere I looked were great watermen, the best in the world. Surfing and being a waterman were what I admired, it was part of my culture and our national sport. Quite simply, it was what I aspired to do.
The ocean is a place of equality, the grand master, the teacher. The ocean for me is life, without it there is no life on earth. Ocean conservation starts with people caring enough to get them to participate. I want to share with people the beauty and the majesty of the ocean. My hope is that in sharing my experiences I can inspire others to have their own and in so doing get them to really care, it takes an army. In Hawaii the sharks are your aumakua which means that the spirits of your ancestors live in the sharks. They are amongst the most magnificent and magical creatures to have ever existed and we need to protect them. The education that Bimini Shark Lab can offer is invaluable, having a deeper understanding empowers us to care in the way that we need. To have apex performance I need everything to be right, from my relationships to spirituality through to my equipment which of course includes my watch. The Bremont Waterman Apex is a piece of art, the level of craftsmanship that has gone into it is clear and its equally as durable having been built to be put through its paces, it can certainly go deeper than I can!”
Matt Smukall, President, CEO and Head of Research for Bimini Shark Lab adds, “We’re truly honoured that Bremont is supporting Bimini Shark Lab with the launch of this special timepiece. Bremont’s contribution will provide vital aid for our ongoing oceanic research to ultimately advance the field of marine science, conservation biology and ultimately go some way to help protect our oceans legacy.” Bremont Co-Founder Giles English concludes, “We loved working with Mark Healey to launch the original Waterman and we’re thrilled to now follow up with the Waterman Apex and to be celebrating another great Waterman. Laird embodies all that it means to be a true Waterman and constantly strives for his apex in all that he does, we’re excited to see him testing the boundaries of our watches and his sport together. Laird represents so much of what Bremont stands for: adventure, drive, determination, and innovation. We stand with Laird in passionately believing in ocean conservation and as such we’re thrilled to be supporting Bimini Shark Lab in their endeavours. We have a reputation for making incredibly tough and functional dive watches which are all tested intensively by the military and explorers alike, the Bremont Waterman Apex is no exception.”
