A Brief History
In the early 1800s, brothers Louis-Victor and Celestin Baume opened a watch dealership in the Swiss village called Les Bois. They managed to uphold a remarkable reputation by producing the highest quality of watches that incorporated the latest innovations.
They then branched out to London where they set up a store called ‘Baume Brothers’. Their business soon bloomed and by the late 19th century, they acquired a global reputation of being a trustworthy watchmaking brand. They were widely recognised for their chronograph watches as well as more complicated models. This led the company to win several awards on an international scale. In 1919, the company was awarded the highest international distinction of the time; the ‘Poincon de Geneve’ quality hallmark.
In the early 1920s, the company director, William Baume joined forces with Paul Mercier. Together, they founded Baume & Mercier, Geneva in 1918. Paul Mercier acknowledged the importance of the brand having to embrace change and stepping in with its time. By the late 1940s, Baume & Mercier launched one of its most successful watch models; the Marquise. With its success, the company then decided to produce more creative yet modern ladies’ watches.
Constantly demonstrating its creativity, Baume & Mercier unveiled innovatively shaped timepieces during the 1970s, such as the ‘Galaxie’ and the ‘Stardust’ which won prestigious international awards including the Golden Rose of Baden-Baden. In 1973, the company brought out the Riviera, one of the world’s first steel sports watches.
