A CONTEMPORARY TAKE ON THE ‘DIRTY DOZEN’
The new Broadsword Recon Limited Edition is a series of 200 timepieces based on the original best-selling 40mm Broadsword from Bremont’s Armed Forces Collection. It is built on the foundations of Bremont’s longstanding partnership with the Ministry of Defence and is designed as a contemporary take on the three handed ‘Dirty Dozen’ field watch. The Recon is a fitting tribute to the regiments of the 1940s whilst also being a rugged and durable piece for explorers of today.
The Broadsword Recon is an extension of Bremont’s sought after Armed Forces Collection, a series of ‘Dirty Dozen’ inspired timepieces born out of Bremont’s official partnership with the Ministry of Defence (MOD). The new contemporary Limited Edition is imbued with vintage cues including the iconic custom trademarked ‘P51’ Super-LumiNova® which can be seen through the sandwich dial construction deployed on this model. The Recon is a fitting tribute to the regiments of the 1940s whilst also being a rugged and durable piece for explorers of today.
The two-piece 40mm stainless steel case is complemented by a classic Bremont NATO strap in stone and grey canvas which not only enhances the military and vintage inspired aesthetic but is also designed for ultimate functionality with a simple fail-safe method to keep the watch secure. Additionally, the Recon comes with a second strap option, either black rubber or a vintage brown leather with white stitch to suit the wearer’s preferred style.
Nick English, Bremont Co-Founder comments, “The Recon harks back to the original Dirty Dozen watches synonymous with military and exploration heritage yet feels incredibly modern on the wrist through the sandwich dial and a lovely saturated lume effect. We introduced a sandwich dial for the first time with our Bamford collaboration and absolutely loved the result so are thrilled to be bringing it back with this model also offering something that feels quite different within our Armed Forces stable of watches.”
The spirit of the original three-handed 1940s ‘Dirty Dozen’ field watches can be seen in the Broadsword Recon’s small seconds dial at 6 o’clock, high degree of vintage lume and Arabic numerals. The modern sandwich dial is a first for Bremont’s Armed Forces Collection and offers enhanced legibility with its ‘layered’ construction. Instead of a single plate, a layered dial is comprised of a solid disc of luminous material which is covered by a plate with index apertures to expose the lume as characters. As well as achieving incredible luminescence the layered design equally adds a satisfying visual depth. In this instance, a vibrant green emission Super-LumiNova® appears across the matt black dial and hands with the dial being framed by a gloss black edge enhancing the overall design.
Limited to only 200 pieces, the Broadsword Recon houses the chronometer rated BE-95-2AV movement. Turning the watch over reveals the signature Armed Forces screw-in case back stamped with the badges of all three services and currently stating ‘Approved by Her Majesty’s Armed Forces’ given the Broadsword Recon was designed and approved by the MOD under Her Majesty’s Reign. Once the King’s crest has been decreed all case backs within Bremont’s Armed Forces Collection will be updated accordingly, making the current version even more collectable.
In a military sense, “recon” is short for reconnaissance, which refers to the act of gathering information about an enemy or a potential battlefield, often conducted by special military units.
In night operations, “recon” also refers to a specific type of reconnaissance that is carried out under cover of darkness. This type of reconnaissance is often performed by small teams of highly trained soldiers who use a variety of specialised equipment, including night vision goggles and thermal imaging devices, to move stealthily and gather information without being detected. Night-time missions can be particularly challenging due to reduced visibility and the need to move quietly and quickly, but they are often crucial to the success of military operations. Aside from the obvious military links, the ‘Broadsword Recon’ was named as such due to the watch’s increased luminosity aiding night vision.
