Every year, Pantone releases a new ‘Colour of the Year’. Typically, this colour is one that will go on to influence global trends across every industry. In the jewellery industry, it is a colour that we expect to see in bracelets, rings, necklaces, earrings and even watches. For a little bit of historical context, Pantone’s Colour of the Year started over 21 years ago, in the year 2000. Beginning with the colour, ‘powdery blue’; specifically, a shade called, ‘Cerulean’. This shade of blue was chosen because of its tranquillity and connotes feelings of calmness and comfort. A fitting colour to introduce the new millennium over two decades ago.
What is the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2021, and why?
This year, there are two colours of the year! We’re being spoilt. The colours for the year 2021 are, Ultimate Grey (17-5104) and Illuminating (13-0647). After the tumultuous year, we’ve just experienced, these two colours come as no surprise. 2020: the year we all know, but no one wants to utter its name anymore or remember. Therefore, the year 2021 calls for increased optimism, determination and unity as we continue to face the ongoing global crisis that is the COVID-19 pandemic. The colours needed this year must inspire and help maintain hope. The Illuminating yellow symbolises the promise of brighter and happier times ahead. Whereas, Ultimate Grey signifies a solid and reliable foundation that we must hold onto for the time being. Very fitting for the year ahead.
